What Is Medical Massage? (And Why It Might Be the Answer to Your Chronic Pain)

When people think of massage, they often picture soft lighting, calming music, and an hour of total relaxation—and that kind of massage absolutely has its place. Relaxation-based sessions can ease tension, calm the nervous system, and even relieve pain when done with intention.
But if you're dealing with chronic pain or a specific issue, there’s another approach worth considering: medical massage. Unlike full-body massage, medical massage focuses on one area at a time—using shorter, more frequent sessions to deliver noticeable, lasting results. When it comes to pain management, this targeted approach often offers a better return than an occasional longer session.
So, What Is Medical Massage?
Medical massage is a therapeutic, goal-oriented style of bodywork designed to treat diagnosed conditions, injuries, or chronic tension patterns. Every session is tailored to your needs—whether you’re addressing shoulder dysfunction, low back pain, nerve entrapment, or recovering from an injury.
It’s not just about relaxation (though that’s a bonus). It’s about restoring function, reducing pain, and supporting your body’s healing process.
What Can Medical Massage Help With?
Chronic pain that won’t go away – whether it’s your back, neck, shoulders, or something else
Stiffness or limited movement – if you're feeling tight or having trouble moving like you used to
Injury recovery – from accidents, surgeries, or just doing too much too fast
Tension from posture or repetitive motions – like sitting at a desk, driving, or lifting at work
Headaches, jaw pain, or nerve discomfort – including things like TMJ or pinched nerves
Insurance + VA Referrals
I’m happy to provide receipts for reimbursement if your insurance covers massage therapy. I’m also a VA Massage Provider, which means if you have a referral for medically necessary massage therapy through your VA provider, you may be able to receive treatment at no out-of-pocket cost.
If you’ve been stuck in a cycle of pain and nothing seems to bring lasting relief, medical massage might be the missing link. It’s one of the most effective ways to combine hands-on care with long-term healing—and I’d love to be part of that process with you.
